I had this same problem. I bet you're running the S3 or S3V X server.
There is some incompatiblity with these servers. This is what I did:

You *must* run the install from within X, as it uses X. Do *not* try
installing

Debian
'hamm' distribution. The readme file states that the libc6 libraries
needed
are already there. I followed the instructions to verify that the
