I hit a problem on installing alsa package for driver of sound card.

Is there an extra steps to configure the sound driver on this laptop? I have

If you install alsa-base then sound levels will be restored f

Hi,
The sound card on my laptop is "Multimedia audio controller: Intel
Corp. 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller"
(output by "lspci | grep audio").
I choose the "ALSA" as the card driver in the kernel option.
The problem is that, when booting into system, the

I know that if you use a pre-built generic 2.4.18 kernels you get
cmpci as a module. I use this driver

I am working on getting sound set up on this Woody computer.
I got a sound card from Frys and plugged it in.
lspci says it is C-Media Electronics CM8738(rev 10).
I suspect that I need the cmpci.o modules, that appeared
when I was installing the vanilla Woody. But I couldn't
get vanilla to handl
Does any body have this, or knows how to get it?
Is not supported by ALSA, yet.
Thanks,
antonio.
I was trying to avoid recompiling because at the moment my only Linux box is
this 120 mega byte disk machine so I don't want to install any more than
absolutely necessary. I'm not sure I have room for the sources and gcc. I
finally found a how-to for alsa. A cursory glance at it suggests that

I have installed a minimal Hamm on a Compaq Prolinea 486 with 120M disk and
an SB compatible sound card (yes I know that they are not always as
compatible as all that but I haven't got far enough to worry about that, I
think).
I used dselect to install alsu-utils and eveything else named alsa

I got an AcerMagic FX-3D sound card (PnP, unfortunately), and currenly am
trying to set it up so that it works. Has anyone been able to get it to
work?
I've tried including SB16 driver in the kernel, but it doesnt work still.
Readme.cards suggests that I use Crystal-based cards driver instead, but
