FWIW I've got the same issue for one Ubuntu install, but with Xfce. I
get this for Ubuntu Precise, but somebody at Ubuntu Studio mailing list
had this issue some releases earlier. IIRC somebody mentioned to set it
by xorg.conf. I'm not trying to solve this issue on my machine, since
it's not urgent

We know the command use at the command line and it works, but.
we would like to have the system comeup without the screen
saver, so if it stops somewhere in boot or a the login prompt the
screen doesnt

This is a trivial matter, but I was trying to figure out a way to have
the screen run xlock after a certain period of inactivity, then the
"xset power" saver if there was a longer period of inactivity. It
looks like using xautolock and "xlock -nolock" with the enablesaver
option, I can get close
