I'm having similar problems on win98 and Samba 3.0.9-1 (on Sarge).
I've found a slight workaround: if I access samba by the ip address of
the server from the win98 system it starts working. E.g. goto Run...
and type '\\124.47.34.97' and press enter. Then I'm able to use the
NetBIOS names as norm
Since 3.0.8 I have a smbfs problem (maybe it is related). I can mount, I can
see and read all the remote files. But when changing a file, input is hanging
for ~30s (e.g. console or editor), coming back with 'i/o error'. Now, the
remote file has 0 bytes.

/usr/share/samba/smb.conf are the name of the workgroup, encrypt passwords
