Hi,
It appears that getting these SB PnP CD-ROMs has been
difficult for several newbies, including myself. I finally got mine working
by installing from a DOS partition. I duplicated the directory structure
of the first Debian CD on my DOS partition, included the *.deb files in

So, the CD-ROM howto didn't clarify which I should be using for my
particular case. It's a SB16 PnP, with a 4x CD-ROM that plugs into the
soundcard. The manual refers to the drive as IDE.

Kernel compilation does nothing to isapnp.conf
You have to do pnpdump (if you havent done do yet), and configure the card
manually.

Actually, I haven't edited mine at all, so unless the kernel
compilation does something to it, there's no sound stuff in it.

I'm trying to help a friend get his SB16 pnp working. I guess I have to use
isapnp, cause it won't recognize the 16 bit DMA channel. It's set up w/ the
same settings he uses in windows with sound compiled-in to the kernel. The
following message appears on startup:

Hi,
save yourself much trouble and do it the debian way.
Install the package kernel-package (it is in admin or misc) and read
/usr/doc/kernel-package/README.gz
You may also have to install the fakeroot package if you

Hi all,
I just recompiled the kernel, and included sound as a module.
I rebooted with the new kernel and everything seems fine.
I then use isapnp tools to generate a isapnp.conf.
But when I try to test my sound card, I got the following error:

I agree, isapnp is the best way to do it as a general rule. I just wanted
to confirm that there are bioses which do full initializations. The
reason that mine worked out just fine is that none of the resources which
are the first pick for the sound card are used on my system, so the values

In looking at the thread, I didn't see anyone mentioning that sound
should be compiled as a module, so isapnp can configure the card
before the sound driver tries to talk to the card. (I have been
known to miss seeing things before )

On the SB's I know, 0x330 is the base for Midi.

Hi,
I have the same card, and I just set it up again 2-3 days ago. If you're
using Debian 2.0 hamm you won't need to download isapnptools as it is
part of the base system and already installed (it may even be for 1.3
for all I know).
All the documentation I needed I found by reading the manpages
fter noting that 3 is not on the "allowed" list !)

I have been working with an SB16 PnP for a while now, and now an SB Awe64.
So I can say that it works as long as you have a PnP bios. Hope this at
least can clarify some things.

Yo-
You will have to download and use the isapnptools package. Once you have
that installed just follow along with the instructions and you should have
sound. By the way, sound *must* be compiled as a module in order for the
isapnptools to work properly.

Hi EveryOne !
I'm trying to enable sound support on my Debian system which, according to
the reading I've done, requires recompilation of the kernel.
Using config (the how-to or readme suggested that xconfig is not the best
to use ?) I have configured everything that I want except SOUND!!!

Hi all!
I am having a problem with my SB16 PnP. Can anyone help me?
It all seems to work fine using isapnp and sound compiled in as a
module.
It seems to be detected fine as shown here:

Well, then, all you really need to do is compile the kernel with sound
support. It might be a little tough to figure out what parameters to
compile in (DMA channels, I/O regions, etc.) because generally one does

Hi there;
How can I install a SB16 plug n' pray on Linux. Do I have to compile the
kernel? What about "isapnptools"? I tried to configure it but did not
work.. I don't want to use bootlin from DOS because I don't have a DOS
partition on my HD.
Thank you
