In the past I have always used two or three linux
machines at home and never with a Windows machine. Having just
re-established a permanent connection to the net a
ppp will not set a default route if a default route currently exists.
Next time try this:-
route del default
route add -net 172.16.x.x (172.16.0.0 if your netmask is 255.255.0.0)
pon
This time ppp will set a default route for you.
