I am too much of a newbie to attempt such a thing. I was raised on
BASIC, on the Timex-Sinclair, C64, TI-994A, then moved to Unix
briefly in college.
Thanks for the replies. More insight is very welcome, so keep them
coming.
So far what I think I am going to do is wait for SuSE 9.1 and the new
release of Debian (which I presume will both use the 2.6 Kernel) and
re-compare, based on user opinions. But the info now is welcome.

This sounds like the Adaptec 2940 problem with some early cards
and the number of SCSI drivers in the boot disks. Do you have a 2940
card? There were some boot disks around that fixed this problem,
unfortunately I can't remember where they were. Perhaps others can tell

Someone here suggested that I download the Debian 2.0 disks and install
using them instead of the 2.1 disks I've been trying to install with. Would

Im Phillip Neumann and a new user of (debian) Linux too. I find
this system MUCH more interesting that Microsoft dos or win95. But i have

I have Debian 1.3 (from the Boot magazine cd) installed on my amd 586,
and most things are working well...got XFree86 running, starting to
learn my way around but still doing a lot of thrashing, and have rtfm'd
til the wee hours.
I'm trying to get a ppp connection to my ISP going and have run into
