My Intel integrated sound has always worked fine, right out of the box,

Now I find the problem
When I play a mp3 file, alsaplayer says:
Failed to load output plugin "alsa". Trying defaults.
error opening /dev/dsp
Failed to initialize plugin!
/usr/lib/alsaplay

this is a straight forward intel audio card based on ac97

and you'll see what's muted - I bet it's the problem you are facing
