I have Win2k running in my vmware3.0 on a debian unstable just great. I've
killed it a few times and rebooted, it checks disks, etc and comes up
nicely.

I'm using the new test release of vmware 3.0 on debian
Okay, so I am answering my own question. It seems that the Express version
only supports win95/98, but the workstation supports many other guest os
options.
