There's some nice fonts here:
http://personal.nbnet.nb.ca/mudhoney/fonts.html and
Hold the control key and right click your mouse while in an xterm. That should
bring up the font menu for you to choose from.

I know that in kernel 2.4.0 there is an entire document covering VGA
fonts, which can alos be compiled in the kernel. I do not know if that is
what you were looking for, but it is at least something.
