How stupid of me? it isn't...i had done
apt-get install x-window-system
and i thought xdm gets installed with that.
I installed it and now it is running fine. Thanks to all of you.

Are you sure you have xdm installed? Run "dpkg-query -W xdm" to check
it. If it is installed, try to reinstall it.
apt-get update
apt-get --reinstall install xdm

files in /etc/rcN.d are actually links to init scripts in /etc/init.d
What you should do is
ln -s /etc/init.d/xdm /etc/rcN.d/S99xdm
