Basically it comes down to this:
1) make a pnpdump, edit the /etc/isapnp.conf and run $isapnp /etc/isapnp.conf
2) compile a kernel with the SB drivers build in as modules
3) reboot with the new kernel
4) insert the modules with modprobe -a (they are sound and sb) with the sb
having parameters like
I can tell you the setup for Slink and Potato is basically the same -- At
least if you're using a 2.2.x kernel. I can't say much for 2.0.x since I
never configured my AWE64 under that system.

Can't really help you with the 'Potato' specific aspects but I have finally
got my AWE64 PnP card working under 'slink' (2.2.12) with some help from
Debian Users (well done Krzys & Hans!)
