Yes. It can create/build the virtual machine along with the vmdk files,

It shouldn't take too long on the server I have here.
Just a quick Q: I've failed to install

I copied the following lines from another virtual machine:
ide1:0.fileName = "auto detect"
ide1:0.deviceType = "cdrom-raw"
After I ran the virtual machine, mounted a CD-ROM, listed its contents,
unmounted it, and shu

I suggest that you put the above information into a README file and
include it inside the zip file.

All,
I have posted two VMware images for download. One for Sarge, another for
Etch. They both have VMware Tools loaded. They were built using the
default desktop installation. The last time they were built was 9/10.
You can find them at "www.netliving.com". I will post a fresh image
every two

Whatever a basic install includes -- e.g. when I install Sarge and get

installer then installs about 80-90 packages shortly thereafter.

Yes, please! :-)
I use the free VMware Player, so whatever is appropriate for that (I
don't own VMware Workstation, and am only vaguely familiar with the
intricacies of their products).
