My experience has been that it's better to start those applications
before you start your window manager. Also, I've had problems when the
window manager isn't "exec"'ed.
Try:
swisswatch &
xload &
xbiff &
exec enlightenment

Yep, that should work fine -- but is a bit bland. I can see why you
would want to spiff it up some.
Try:
swisswatch &
xload &
xbiff &
enlightenment
a .xsession is executed similarly to a shell script, and it expects the
last application to be blocking, until the x session itself is complete
