Did you recompiled the kernel? I think you might miss out some
option in ppp part in the kernel.

Put 'kdebug 4' in /etc/ppp/options, try again, and post the result.

Broken software at the other end, most likely. Just turn off compression.
It makes little difference over a modem anyway since the modem is doing
compression.

Then there are systems like buoy.com that are running 16 ports with
ppp and no prob
