Just for the record, not my experience. The mouse on my Gate
Try configuring your mouse with gpmconfig, this way you can find out on
what /dev/ your mouse is, so you'll be a little bit further.

Does the mouse work in GPM? Did you try gpmconfig in a console? That might
help
