I use KMail but I don't use SMTP with Gmail. Here are some ideas:
1. Try using KMail on that computer to send mail with another SMTP server.
2. Run KMail from a shell and watch the output, see if there are any errors.
3. Is the version of KMail (and KDE) on the other system the same as
