i installed the precompiled kernel image 'kernel-image-2.4.18-586tsc',
added 'initrd=/initrd.img' to the 'image=/vmlinuz' stanza in
/etc/lilo.conf as adviced during the kernel-image installation. i then
ran modconf and selected the appropriate module for my network
