Type 'pon' (as root), and note what your modem does. Then type 'plog' and
post the output. We also need to know what sort of modem you have and what
port it is on.

You probably made mistake configuring your nameservers.
Check /etc/resolv.conf, it should look like this:
search
nameserver 216.88.77.7
nameserver 216.88.76.6
Assuming that ev1.net is your dialup ISP.
