You seem to have a PCMCIA problem. After I wrote a follow up 10
minutes ago I searched where I store my old computer stuff and found a
Megahertz XJ1144. I tested it on an old notebook running Linux 2.2.9
and the PCMCIA card services and modules version 3.0.9 and did not
have a problem at all

you´re really sure about that it isn´t a winmodem? a modem problem i
would investigate with minicom. there you can send commands to your
modem and watch the answers.
