Yes, I have the newewst libpaperg installed: Aside from the error I get
when opening gziped ps/eps/pdf files, which I presume is a separate
problem, all the errors are the same A4: Unknown papersize thing.

First: gv is a debian package, no need to build it yourselve.
Second: gv is only a (very nice indeed) wrapper around gs. If gs cannot
understand the file, the gv will also fail, as gv just calls gs.
