You're on target. Here's a sample of my ~/.Xresources copied from the
sample Xdefaults that comes with Xemacs.
Emacs.default.attributeBackground: white
Emacs.default.attributeForeground: black
The default Debian setup wants it named .Xresources (as opposed to
.Xdefaults).
