right, i don't think dselect was the cause of the problem. i think
the problem was that he removed all his previous stable sources and
put in a bunch of testi

Thanks for the responses, guys!
The apt-get update and apt-get dist-upgrade took care of it.
I guess it was pretty naive of me to just run dselect...
The error also does come up with apt-get update but there it doesn't hang the install
script.
Makes all the difference :-)

both before running dselect. actually, i wouldn't use dselect at all
but that's personal preference. either way, the only error that i'd
be concerned about from your post is:

ya! i too finally got my proliant 5500 with SMARTII RAID controller to
work, but i installed from debian floppies. my method using potato (also
did it with slink) boot floppies.
1.download kernel source and compile a new kernel with SNARTII compiled in
2.cp the kernel into /floppy/linux
3.edit
well as far as i know dselect will start out where it last left off and
finish intalling the rest of the 130 Megs, i'm not sure if it has
installed these packages yet or not, i would guess not. if you are using
apt mehtod of getting your debs then they will be downloaded to
/var/cache/apt/archives/
Actually I had the same problem when I first
installed debian and this is how I resolved it. Instead of trying to determine
the block device name (which I did find, but it didn't work) you should mount
your CDRom then choose install from a previously mounted file system from the
dselect men
