So I ran smartctl -t short /dev/hda gave no errors and then ran smartctl -t long /dev/hda and also ended without errors. The output from smartclt -l selftest /dev/hda is:
=== START OF READ SMART DATA SECTION ===SMART Self-test log structure revision number 1Num Test_Description Status
Well I think that it is ATIIXP. Here is the lspci output:
:00:00.0 Host bridge: ATI Technologies Inc: Unknown device 5a31 (rev 01) Subsystem: Fujitsu Siemens Computer GmbH: Unknown device 1098 Flags: bus master, 66MHz, medium devsel, latency 64
:00:01.0 PCI bridge: ATI Technologies Inc:
Actually I want DMA enabled and by switching DMA off I would like to see if there still appears some errors, but I think a better ideea is to check with smartctl.
I use the latest kernel 2.6.17.13 and I have ATIIXP chipset.

Maybe this is related to the fact that BIOS sets the HDD's DMA. If I
enter the BIOS it shows that the HDD is set to dma mode 5 so maybe I
should disable dma in the kernel if the bios anyway sets the DMA

I have had similar problems with an Asus A7M266-D motherboard with multiple
kernel versions (2.2 through 2.6, I think).
From what I've been able to gather, my motherboard's IDE controller (AMD

Here's some potentially "out-there" speculation - and I hope I'm not leading
you down the garden path.
It just *might* be a "signal integrity" issue being introduced by the caddy.
This could be in either the area of "stubs" or "ground returns". I did this
electrical behavior analysis for 14 years
