Can't help with the install issue, sorry.
On a different tack, you might check out the Linux Router Project at

well, i understood that, and i have my disks. but in the
installationprogram, there are two options:
- preload modules
dd driver disks (3 of them for compact) to Floppy as originally designed

A common cause of this problem is that the floppy drive may
be of the newer ATAPI type common to newer laptops
especially, as constrasted to the older /dev/fd0 floppy
type. The install kernels come with ide-floppy support
needed for ATAPI compiled in, but the kernel installed has

You can create a boot-floppy by doing the following steps:
1. format a diskette, under
hamm: fdromat
slink: superformat /dev/fd0
(:mformat -s18 -t80 -h2 -S2 -M512 a:)
2. cp /boot/vmlinuz-2.0.36 /dev/fd0

There was a lot of discussion about this on the linux-kernel mailing

Indeed it did. :)
I had to use the rescue disk on master in Incoming but with my custom

I just wanted to thank you for your suggestion. It seems to be working!
I am having problems getting the boot procedure find the root filesystem
but at least I got this far! Any suggestions about the kernel being
unable to find the root filesystem?

You can use the rescue disk by giving it a root= option, but the better
solution is just to build a boot floppy.
Hm. That sounds as if the rescue disk kernel might not be getting all of the
flags it needs. Try them manually:
boot: linux initrd load_ramdisk=1 root=0100
Other possibilities:
root.bin isn't on your rescue floppy. You need it there.
