Doh! Problem solved. Just noticed the bit at the end of the long error message
saying "do apt-get update to fix these problems". it's happily doing it
now.

Also I've just noticed that /var/cache/apt/archives doesn't have any .debs in
it - instead it has a file called "lock" and a directory called "partial"
which is empty is this the source
