Thanks to all those who tried to help me. Afterstep was running in 16bpp, not 8. If I modified the .steprc file I could make the AFstep.xpm icon appear elsewhere on the wharf bar. The fix was to install xproc_1.12.2_i386.deb from the /debian/updates directory. This made xload work again and fixed
