A search for winmodem US Robotics on http://www.google.com/linux will give
you plenty of links that might help you a lot.

Gargiulo,
There is a way to fix you unresolved symbols problem
but if you truly have a winmodem made by Lucent then
you want to go to this url and it will lead you to
where you can download a .deb driver for your kernel.

AFAIK "WinModems" are cripled, i.e. they only understand a part of the
hayes standard command. I admit that I never had this problem and only
read about that, but it is a known problem and can only b
If it's a PCI modem, it's probably a winmodem. From the looks of things
it's a winmodem. I'd return it for two reasons. 1) It's junk and not a

similar problem with a Rockwell modem someone gave me, and it turns out to

I agree, but they probably just don't want to mess with it. Maybe once
more people use Linux
You would think that now that US Robotics is owned by 3com this would

As evil as MS are, they are not responsible for all of the world's

Hi. I had that problem too. If it's a winmodem, forget it!
Get yourself a real modem. Debian people won't write a driver for it. MS has
a closed door policy on their code, and probably locks their developers in
it too.
Sorry.

I'm one of the lucky ones that had a winmodem and presently have a winprinter.
I read
there is a driver for winprinters. That's my nest big project trying to get the
printer working. The driver info is at:

Winmodems and windows printers only work with M$ windoze. The drivers
are proprietary and written only for m$ stuff.

Win modems are almost always made by US Robotics. You should only need to type
"pon". You also need to ensure that you have told ppp to use the right com
port. If the modem is a plug and play modem, you need to install the isapnp
tools and follow their instructions.

By the way, if the manufacturer had not gone out of their way to make it

They don't use the standard interface.
They won't disclose the details of the interface.
They won't write a device driver of their own.

Winmodems are not supported under Linux (ref: Debian Installation Manual,
among other places). Sorry :(
If you choose to replace it with a non-Windows PnP modem, you may find the
isapnptools package usefull in getting it installed. If it is not in your
