Thank you for your kind help.
It pointed me into the right direction, and so I'm posting this
as a follow up + solution for the list:
When I press the number sign/apostrophe key, which on my German keyboard
is left to Enter, has # and (with shift) ' printed on it,
xev: keycode 51 "numb

On my (UTF-8) system the apostrophe key can be used.
