If this is the case then you should talk to him/her and find out if s/he can
edit the firewall rules to allow your new box to access the internet.

What files would i check? I haven't manually edited
anything for a firewall in my other debian box

Hey, only http is proxied (which i haven't configured
because it requires 128-bit encryption so i have to
use an old version of netscape). Anyway, ftp isn't
proxied, i (should) have free access.
