Hi:
I use Sound Blaster AWE64 and found this one to be very helpful:

Hi,
Apart from alsa-config you need
alsa-driver-0.5.10b.tar.bz2
alsa-lib-0.5.10b.tar.bz2
alsa-utils-0.5.10.tar.bz2 and install them in the same order.
check out the ftp://ftp.alsa-project.org/pub/driver/ for
newer versions.
regards,
sherab

Roddie,
I've just configured my SoundBlaster Vibra 16pnp card on Friday.
I started off sending a posting to this newsgroup, compiled a 2.2 kernel,
read plenty of docs and manuals and if you have the some card that is
Vibra 16, than I guess you may be experiencing the same problems I have
experience

I had the same thing happen. I ended up having to check my i/o, irq. and
dma(s) for my system to get what was free. Here is what I did, I have no
idea if its correct but it works.
isapnp with whatever conf file pnp came up with.
modprobe sound
insmod uart401 (in reality this probably isn't neede

I have the same type of card, and rather than fool with the stuff you are
getting into, I downloaded the $20
