Don't quote me on this reply because it's only a shot! You may want to try
another hard drive. I've had problems in the past with Maxtor 8.6Gb hard
drives conflicting with a Cyrix CPU and another hardware conflict with a
Compaq motherboard that had a P166 on it.

I have had same problems after updating from 2.0.36-2 to 2.0.36-3
but , oops, I've still forgotten following steps:
1. configure kernel for sound
- You have already done so
2. change to the `/usr/src/awedrv` d

MAYBE you could try
cd dev; ./MAKEDEV update
with the sb modules inserted. this does create /dev/ds

I have some more information. I tried installing again. the same thing
happened.
Everything unpacks ok until it reaches emacs20 this is what it says:
Unpacking emacs20

I've got an unofficial install-disk set for slink, with version 5.1.12
of the aic7xxx driver... slightly newer than the version in slink's
diskset. It's at "http://www.debian.org/~adric/aic7xxx/slink/";.
If that doesn't work, and you know of a particular version of the driver

The future has arrived.
I didn't wait long enough. I turned my back, and sure enough the serial ports
were
back on auto and I couldn't connect. It wasn't different versions of setserial
as I
had thought.
Anyway, Brandon, your solution of adding "serial" to /etc/modules appears to
have
worked.
Hi, Brandon
Sorry I didn't see your message sooner. What I ended up doing is reverting the
slink setserial back to the hamm one, and that took care of the problem. I
think I'll leave well enough alone, but will save your message for a future
attempt.
Thanks

Hi, John
That was a stock 0setserial, just with the change to irq3 as I mentioned before.
When I updated packages from slink, setserial (_2.14-3) was one that I upgraded
to.
So I reverted to the hamm setserial (_2.12-6) and now the change to irq3 stays
permanent. I didn't upgrade the kernel, I'm

Thanks, John H
I'm embarrased to say I must have recently deleted the $ by accident. This
was in
the manual section though.
${SETSERIAL} -b /dev/ttyS2 uart 16450 port 0x3E8 irq 3 ${STD_FLAGS}
^ (i put it back in)
So I don't get the SETSERIAL not found anymore on bootup, but I still have to

You changed something else, too. The distributed 0setserial has the line:

This may not work for you so try at your own risk :)
I used dselect, told it to update from the "frozen" directory and it
basically went and got all of slink and installed it on my drive.
I rebooted and sure enough the machine still run!
I haven't tried apt-get yet :)
