Also tried mounting it as uid, uid. Complained.
Mounted it as in fstab using mount /dev/hda1 -o ro
N problem.
I should be able to do it as I wanted to?

does it work running the script from a shell? that is, have you tested
it outside of cron? maybe mount -t vfat,users? or some umask? chmod
your /mnt etc etc etc
