I've managed to get a decent, but not quite satisfactory, 800x600 16bpp
display using xf86config.

It works here, but not with 24 bits color
I saw that email in the archive. I had the same problem. The solution was to
be a little more humble and switch to 16 bit color depth.
Change the line
DefaultDepth24
to
DefaultDepth16
in the XF86Config.
