I've just been through similar ordeal, I found that hotplug (apt-get
install hotplug) automatically fixed my problem and I only had to edit
XF86Config-4. I also found hotplug causes my system to reboot randomly,
so to get my mouse working I had to:
- modprobe usbcore
- modprobe uhci-hcd
- modprobe

You don't need BIOS support. You can set up ISA Plug & Play devices such as
your modem
with the utilities found in the isapnp package. First install the isapnp
package. To
configure it, first run pnpdump to scan your system for PNP devices and
generate a
