OK, this is embarrassing, but I have solved the problem. The system had a headphone plugged in that had fallen behind the system unnoticed (and I thought the sound from its one speaker was the motherboard speaker). Unplugged the item and all is well. Stuart -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-
