PLIP doesn't sound like the best solution for you, as you would need to get
some kind of parallel switch - and those are notorious for causing problems
rather than fixing them.
SLIP/PPP sounds like a possible solution. You do not have to use the modems at

What type of network card do you have ?
Also post your /etc/init.d/network, maybe theres a problem in there.
No matter what the problem is, you really should re-compile the kernel
with support added for only those features you want.
