Start with apt-get kernel-package. That will ensure you get all the
apps on which it depends. Read the kernel-package docs (in
/usr/share/doc/kernel-package). They're very straightforward.

recieved a message about not being in a top level directory ( I was at a

No. Install the package called 'kernel-package', which gives you

Also I'm using the bf24 kernel on a pentium III 500mHz desktop system.
When I did apt-cache search kernel-headers I got a list of headers
kernel-header.2.4.16 and kernel-header.2
