Thank you Martin & Donald.
This problem was linked to the Netwrok and SCSI cards sharing the same
IRQ. This was on a Gateway G6-200
The solution to this problem is to juggle the PCI cards until it works!

My old Slackware distribution was of Kernel 2.0.12, and had support for
the card.
