Yes it can be done. You'll need to get the version of apt-get that is in
ftp.debian.org/debian/dists/stable/main/upgrade-2.0-i386/ and then edit
your /etc/apt/sources.list to point to the potato packages. Run apt-get
update followed by apt-get dist-upgrade. It's been quite a while since I
did this

It may be a bug, but I am not sure. You can fix it by using the http port.

Yes! libc6 requires libc6-dev of the same level. I have had this problem
in the past.
just run your apt-get -f install and it will pull whatever files are required
to solve the problem. (which means upgrading libc6-dev)

Another thing to watch out for is the AutoSelect of the interface.
You might be better off selecting 10mbit for the installation
then tweaking it later on. The 3Com's especially have troubles

I found the info on the bug tracking system that the home/end key problem was
fixed in the latest release.
The xrdb problem was a user error -- have to start a new xterm to test the new
resources. I had gotten used to xmodmap working immediately in xterms that
were already open.

As a second note: there is libc6 r5 available (maybe in
Incoming). Don't use the r3.
