After doing an apt-get update and apt-get upgrade this after noon, the
planner package was updated which after checking the bug reports for
planner, seems to be the culprit of this problem. It is now fixed. If
you are experiencing the same thing then upgrade to the latest version
of planner and it

You need to actually run a gdesklet. What is running on your system now
is basically just the engine to allow the gdesklet monitors to run.
