dmesg|less (or more) and look for the cdrom it should have a line like
hdb: ATAPI 15X CDROM drive, 120kB Cache
hdb is the entry in /dev.

How about /cdrom? I think it comes as an "official" place for it in Debian.
So this directory should actually exist on your Debian box.
