It seems that at least switching to the other card doesn't seem to lead
to overruns and errors.
I'll have to run some transfers to be sure.

Well I got a spare 3c509 that has not been used. I suppose I could try
that card too. I got no spare cable, but if the spare card is also
having problems, that would give me a good idea what's going on.

Me too, I had two 3c509 ISA (out of the three I had) die in similar ways
in the few last weeks. I guess they are beginning to show their age.

Sounds more likely to be a hardware problem. Check cables with a cable
tester and try changing the network card.
These problems aren't normal and a 486/32MB ram configured as a samba server
for a small no of users should be ok.
