I'm sorry for starting a thread and then not responding but I got really
busy. I thought I'd post a summary of the advice I got and what I
eventually did to get Debian up and running on this system.
Thanks to the many people who responded to my question both on the list

I had to make a special install boot disk with a recompiled kernel.
The probing for stuff disturbs the Adaptec SCSI card.

If you suspect a section of memory, you can pass a `reserve=' switch
on the kernel command line. I think this would

The 6000 series have SCSI and Ethernet standard. I believe they have a
soundcard also but I'm not sure about that.

If you suspect the problem is the Ethernet card, why don't you take it
out? If it is integrated in the motherboard just disable it from
the ROM BIOS.
