I think the difference is what you get from man startx:

Did you try to set:
-height Set height of startup window to .
-width Set width of startup window to .

Yes, of course! This is embarrassing-- I thought I had done that but, as
you have politely pointed out, I forgot.
Thanks, I think that should fix it.

I think the xplanetbg command should also have a & at the end.

Or, if you are running X to really run gnome, just type gdm to get the gnome
login prompt and on into gnome.

I created ~/.xsession and added the line
xsetroot -solid "#2f4f4f" and it didn't work.
I then added # !/bin/sh
to the first line and that didn't work
I then created ~/.xsession and added the line
xsetroot
xdm runs .xsessionrc, startx runs .xinitrc

Wrong. .xsession is responsible for star
I think that I have that stuff in .xinitrc and then I have
.xsession containing the command: eval .xinitrc
Also, .xsession should be chmod +x

Or just
ln -s .xinitrc .xsession
which has worked fine for me.
I do the same for .Xdefaults -> .Xresourc

I ran into this. Reading /etc/X11/Xsession told me enough to
fix it.
Edit /etc/X11/config and add the following lines:

Here's an example of how I sometimes launch xdm:
