If you have a debian system, there are no rpms - thats fedora or redhat!
Debain has .deb, but use a package manager like aptitude or synaptics is

You wouldn't fix it. if you want to upload files to a restricted
directory you could add your account to root group and allow it to write
the directory, or you could set a new account specific for ftp maintenance

Well, I finally got to the bottom of it.
There seems to be a bug in the DLink G604T router doing DNS under some
circumstances. Even after a firmware upgrade.
I got tcpdump out to look what was happening and saw some very strange things.
For instance, an ftp request to ftp.nl.debian.org was actual

If you have managed to set up all these servers, you could also try set
up a CVS server.
A CVS server can be used for managing versions of you files and is also
a standard way to deploy web pages and code to a live web environment.
AFAIK it is very secure assuming that you run the CVS server
If you only allow SSH and not telnet, you should not really allow ftp
either.
Perhaps look into some more secure alternatives (like scp, sftp or
something)
Also, make sure that you do not run your webserver as root, since if someone
do manage to break in through your webserver, then they will have
