XFree86 has a default screen blanking function.
In version 4.1 this is set with the BlankTime option in section Serverflags.
See man XF86Config-4 for further info.
Note that this value may be overruled by your windowmanager (or a screensaver
if you had one installed).

xset s off
should do
If you want a screen saver, try xscreensaver (also, on console, a screen
blocker can be useful : lockvc)
