sorry, i think you misinterpreted my question:
when downloading a package with dselect (apt) it tries to configure it
automagically afterwards ([C]onfigure point in dselect)! There it hangs
at the package xserver-xfree86 forever...
can someone please explain why? should i just ignore it?

I believe that in the package xbase-clients there is the script xf86config,
which can generate a XF86Config-4 configuration file.
