Run gpmconfig
( or it was gpmconf, someone? ), and accept all the defaults
BUT the repeat protocol should be
none.
This should fix it without
sacrificing the gpm

I had this problem; it went away when I purged gpm;
gpm, as configured in Debian (but not in Redhat) interferes with X's mouse.
