Resolution: Thanks to all. This problem is now resolved. What was necessary was to switch the BIOS to disk type USER and enter the c/h/s figures off the drive, because the updated BIOS still didn't auto-detect these. (I had assumed that these were limited by bitcount and hadn't tried to exceed

if you haven't already..try to find a flash update for your bios. or you could use one of those disk utils that allow windows to access more then 8GB. however you would have(i believe?) to boot linux via loadlin for that to work with linux. maybe not. i'm not sure. i hate those disk utils for one

Thanks to those who have replied. Let me recapitulate: I have a 10.2Gb disk. I am using an updated BIOS, which recognises 10Gb of space and does not attempt to show a geometry. `sfdisk -s' shows the correct size: 10022040 However, cfdisk actually assigns 8Gb and then considers the disk to be
